Is It Really Worth Paying More Just for the Logo?

When buying MVHR filters, many people ask the same question: do you really need to buy an original filter, or can a high-quality alternative perform just as well?

The short answer is: it is not always worth paying extra for the brand name. However, an even bigger mistake is choosing the cheapest option simply because it costs less. A high-quality alternative filter can perform just as effectively as an original, but only if it has been manufactured to the same quality standards.

So, the most important question is not “original or alternative?”, but rather “how can you tell a high-quality alternative from a poor-quality filter?”

Can an Alternative Filter Be as Good as the Original?

Yes. Many MVHR manufacturers do not actually manufacture their own filters — these are produced for them by specialist filter manufacturers. This means that high-quality alternatives are available on the market that meet the same technical requirements.

The key consideration is whether the filter has been manufactured in accordance with the ISO 16890 standard. This international standard classifies filters according to their efficiency in capturing airborne particles of different sizes, ranging from larger dust particles to PM2.5 and PM1 particles that can pose a risk to health.

Why Doesn’t Price Alone Tell You Anything About Quality?

At first glance, two filters may look exactly the same. Both may be designed for the same MVHR unit, yet their quality can differ significantly.

Cheaper filters are often manufactured using lower-density filter media, weaker frames or poorer sealing. As a result, some of the air may bypass the filter media and enter the MVHR system with little or no filtration.

Eurovent and ISO 16890 guidance emphasise that filter classification alone is not enough — the overall structural integrity and airtightness of the filter are also important.

What Should You Look for When Choosing an Alternative Filter?

If you want to avoid overpaying while still maintaining good indoor air quality, there are several important factors to check before buying:

✔ Filtration class. It should match the manufacturer’s recommendation. The most commonly used classes include:

  • ISO Coarse (G4)
  • ISO ePM10 (M5)
  • ISO ePM1 (F7)

If a lower-class filter is offered instead of an F7 filter, its filtration efficiency may be significantly lower.

✔ ISO 16890 certification. Reliable manufacturers clearly state the filter classification according to ISO 16890. If this information is not provided, it is worth being cautious.

✔ Filter media. The filter class is not the only important factor — the quality of the filter media itself also matters. High-quality synthetic filter media maintains good airflow and retains its filtration performance for longer.

✔ Frame quality. A sturdy frame helps the filter retain its shape throughout its service life. Cheap cardboard frames or frames that are prone to deformation can create gaps that allow air to bypass the filter media.

✔ Airtight fit. Even a high-efficiency filter will not perform effectively if there are gaps between the filter and its housing. Eurovent guidance highlights that air bypass leakage reduces actual filtration efficiency.

When Can a Cheap Filter End Up Costing More?

At first glance, choosing a cheaper filter may save you a few euros or even tens of euros. In the long run, however, it could cost you more.

Poor sealing means that more dust can enter the MVHR system. The heat exchanger becomes contaminated, the fans are placed under greater strain, and the system may lose some of its efficiency.

HVAC research shows that as filter resistance increases or filter condition deteriorates, fan energy consumption may rise, while inadequate air filtration can negatively affect Indoor Air Quality (IAQ).

How Can You Avoid Overpaying Without Compromising on Quality?

If a filter is made from high-quality materials, has a clearly stated ISO 16890 classification, is designed to fit your specific MVHR unit precisely and provides an airtight fit, there is no reason to pay extra simply for a brand name.

However, if there is little or no information available about the filter class, manufacturer or materials used, it is worth considering whether saving a few euros is really worth the potential reduction in indoor air quality and additional strain on your MVHR system.

When choosing MVHR filters, what matters most is not the logo on the packaging, but what is inside the filter. A high-quality alternative can be just as reliable as an original filter, provided that it meets the same technical standards and is made from high-quality materials.
